The George Washington Carver National Monument near Diamond, in Newton County, is a National Park Service site that preserves the farm where Carver was born and grew up.
Near Diamond, in Newton County, the National Park Service runs the George Washington Carver National Monument. It sits on the old Moses Carver farm. This is where George Washington Carver was born into slavery and spent his early childhood. He grew up to become a well-known scientist, educator, and agricultural innovator.
Congress set the site aside in 1943. According to the Park Service, it was the first unit of the national park system created to honor an African American.
Today you can visit a visitor center with a museum, exhibits, and a short film. A one-mile loop called the Carver Trail leads through woods and a tallgrass prairie area. You can also see the Carver birthplace site, the 1881 Moses Carver house, and the Carver family graves.
