Where Vernon County property tax money goes versus who collects it

Understanding that a Vernon County property tax bill is a stack of separate levies, and that the assessor and collector play different roles, helps owners read their bill and know where to direct questions or appeals

Your Vernon County property tax bill is not one single county tax. It is really a stack of separate charges, called levies. A levy is a tax rate set by a taxing body. Several taxing bodies can cover one piece of land. These can include the county, a school district, a city like Nevada, and a road or fire district.

Two county offices in Nevada do different jobs. The assessor decides what your real estate and personal property are worth. The assessor then sets the assessed value using state property classes. The collector applies the levies, mails your bill, takes your payment, and gives you a receipt.

This split tells you where to go. Questions about value, classification, or an appeal go to the assessor and then the State Tax Commission. Questions about your bill, payment, or receipt go to the collector.

Levy rates and values change each year. So confirm current numbers with the county offices and the State Tax Commission. Do not assume last year’s figures. Always treat any specific rate as something to check.
