One county tax bill can fund many authorities

St. Louis County says the Collector calculates, bills, and collects property taxes for more than 200 taxing authorities, which helps explain why bills vary by address.

Two nearby St. Louis County homes can sit in different tax stacks. The property tax bill is not just one county charge. The Collector calculates, bills, and collects property taxes for more than 200 taxing authorities in the county.

Those layers can include school districts, fire districts, municipalities, libraries, and other authorities. A short move across a boundary can change the levy mix, even when the houses feel like the same neighborhood. The Collector sends the bill and takes the payment, but many local bodies can be represented on that bill.

Use the office split to stay oriented. Value and assessment questions start with the Assessor. Bills, payments, receipts, and the taxing-authority breakdown belong with the Collector and the county’s tax-dollar information.
