The state's geology agency is headquartered in Rolla

The Missouri Geological Survey, the state's geology agency, is based in Rolla, making it a local resource for well logs, karst data, and GeoSTRAT geologic mapping.

Rolla is home to the Missouri Geological Survey, the geology arm of the Department of Natural Resources and the state’s official geology agency. For Phelps County residents that means the people who track Missouri’s groundwater, karst, mineral resources, and geologic hazards work locally. The Survey maintains records that matter to property owners: well and borehole logs, geologic maps, and GeoSTRAT, an online tool for viewing geologic and well data by location. Anyone buying rural land, drilling or plugging a well, or checking sinkhole and bedrock conditions can use these resources as a starting point rather than guessing. The agency is the right official anchor for geology and groundwater questions across the Ozarks, and it happens to sit in the county seat.
