California anchors Moniteau County as the county seat

Understanding why the seat sits at California, near the county's center, explains the courthouse-square town pattern and where county business, records, and offices are handled.

The county seat of Moniteau County is the city of California. A county seat is the town where the main county offices are. California sits near the middle of the county. It holds the courthouse and the main county offices. Many Missouri counties set up in the 1800s put the seat near the center. That way people from all over the county could reach it. The town then grew around a courthouse square. If you move here or do business here, this is where you go. The assessor, collector, recorder, and other county offices are based here. Deeds and tax records are kept here too. The county was organized on February 14, 1845, from parts of Cole and Morgan counties, according to the Missouri State Archives. To be sure of other founding details and the courthouse’s history, check with the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Missouri State Archives. Trust those official sources, not local stories.
