Madison County's tax search needs the right kind of number

Madison County's property tax inquiry separates real estate and personal property, so parcel numbers and account numbers are not interchangeable.

Madison County’s website links residents to an online tax-payment and inquiry portal. The portal separates real estate search from personal property search, which is the first practical clue.

For real estate, the search help says the best way to search is by parcel number, though it also offers owner name and physical-address fields. For personal property, the portal uses personal property criteria such as account number and owner name.

That distinction helps prevent a common small-county paperwork snag. A parcel number is not the same thing as a personal property account number, and a vehicle-tax question may not search like a land question. If the online search does not find what you expect, use the county website to route back to the courthouse office instead of guessing across search fields.
