Mount Vernon is the Lawrence County seat with a courthouse square
Mount Vernon is the county's government hub, and the courthouse square is where the assessor, collector, recorder, and county commission business gets done, which orients newcomers to where county services actually live
Mount Vernon sits near the middle of Lawrence County. It is the county seat. That means it is the town where most county business gets done. The courthouse and the offices around the square usually hold the services you will need. These include the assessor and collector for property taxes. The recorder of deeds keeps property records. The county clerk and the county commission work here too. (The county commission is the group that runs the county.) If you are new here, it helps to know the seat is Mount Vernon. It is not Aurora, the bigger town nearby. Aurora has more people and more stores. But county government is based in Mount Vernon. Offices can move or split between buildings. So check the Lawrence County government website before you go, to be sure of the right place and hours.
