Lafayette County tax bills pass through local district layers
The Lafayette County Collector collects current and delinquent property taxes and distributes collections to tax entities such as schools, library, and fire districts.
A Lafayette County tax bill is connected to more than one local layer. The county Collector page says the Collector is responsible for collecting current and delinquent real and personal property taxes for the county and for political subdivisions that have authorized property levies.
The same page says collections are accounted for and distributed to entities such as schools, library, and fire districts. That is why two addresses in the same county can carry different tax-line stories.
For a resident or buyer, the useful question is more specific than “what is the county tax?” Ask which school, fire, library, road, city, or other district covers the property. The Collector handles the collection and distribution side, while the Assessor handles value. That split keeps a bill question from being sent to the wrong office.
