The forks of the Fabius River drain Knox County

Knox County is drained by branches of the Fabius River, so floodplain and bottomland status is a real factor for rural property and varies parcel by parcel.

Knox County’s land is drained by the Fabius River and its forks, which thread through the county on their way southeast toward the Mississippi. That means floodplain and low-lying bottomland are a real part of the picture for rural property here, and flood-zone designation still varies parcel by parcel rather than across the whole county. River and creek frontage and bottom ground are not the only places to check, since smaller tributaries can flood too. For a buyer or owner the practical move is to look up a specific parcel’s flood-zone designation at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, and to understand what flood risk applies to that address, rather than assuming the whole county is either safe or at risk. Missouri SEMA offers general flood-preparedness guidance for the county as well.
