Herculaneum's lead-smelter history belongs in official records
Near Herculaneum, lead-smelter history is a calm official-record check for buyers and residents, not a reason to rely on rumor.
Herculaneum has a real lead-smelter history, and the careful way to handle it is through official records. EPA’s Superfund site information identifies the Herculaneum Lead Smelter Site at 881 Main Street in Herculaneum, in Jefferson County. EPA also has enforcement materials tied to Doe Run Resources and the former Herculaneum smelter.
That does not answer every parcel question by itself, and it does not mean a whole town should be reduced to one industrial story. It does mean a buyer, renter, or nearby resident should use EPA records as a starting point for soil, dust, cleanup, and disclosure questions. For a specific address, ask qualified local and environmental professionals rather than relying on neighborhood rumor.
