KCMO earnings tax follows the city, not the county

Kansas City's earnings tax is a city tax, so the key question for a Jackson County resident or worker is whether the address or workplace is inside Kansas City, Missouri.

Jackson County contains part of Kansas City, Missouri, but the KCMO earnings tax is a city tax. Kansas City’s finance department describes the earnings tax as a tax on earned income for people who live or work in Kansas City, Missouri.

That boundary matters in a county with many municipalities. Two Jackson County households can have different city tax questions because one is inside KCMO and another is in Independence, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, or another city. A workplace address can matter too.

Use Kansas City finance pages for the earnings-tax rule and Jackson County sources for county property-tax paperwork. They often affect the same household, but they are separate governments.
