Kansas City Region

Independence is a hub of frontier trail history

Independence was a major jumping-off point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails, which explains a cluster of historic sites and the town's identity.

In the 1800s, Independence was a big starting point for people heading west. Travelers gathered here to buy supplies before their long trip. From here they set out on three famous routes: the Santa Fe Trail, the Oregon Trail, and the California Trail. A “trail” was the overland path wagons followed across the country. This history is why you can still find trail-related historic sites and markers in the area. It also helps explain why the town grew where it did, right at the edge of settled land. If you are visiting or new to the area, the National Park Service’s national trails pages and the local historic sites are the most reliable places to get the full story. Independence is a good window into how the whole Kansas City region served as a gateway to the West. For details and hours, confirm with the local site or office.
