Elephant Rocks State Park: giant granite boulders you can walk among
Elephant Rocks is one of the county's signature, family-friendly destinations and a clear window into the granite geology and quarrying history of the area.
Elephant Rocks State Park, near Graniteville in Iron County, is built around a cluster of enormous rounded granite boulders, some lined up like a train of elephants, that formed as ancient granite weathered along its joints. It is one of the most accessible scenic stops in the St. Francois Mountains, with a paved interpretive trail that makes the main rocks reachable for many visitors. The same pink granite that draws people here was quarried commercially in the area and used in buildings and paving far beyond the county, so the park ties scenery to the region’s stone-working history. For a visitor the practical notes are simple: it is a day-use park, the rocks get hot and slick, and Missouri State Parks publishes current hours, trail, and safety information. Missouri State Parks is the source for what is open and allowed.
