Ozarks (Rural)
West Plains is the county seat and the regional Ozark hub
West Plains anchors county government, courts, and services for a wide rural area, so understanding it explains where the offices a resident needs actually are.
West Plains is the county seat of Howell County. A county seat is the town where the main county offices are. It is also the biggest shopping and service town for a wide rural part of the south-central Ozarks. People from nearby rural counties come here to shop, see a doctor, and go to school.
County government sits in West Plains. So does the courthouse. The assessor’s office and the collector’s office are here too. You use those for property and vehicle paperwork. Most county business runs through West Plains. That includes deeds at the recorder’s office and tax receipts. You won’t find these spread across small towns.
One thing to know: because everything is in one town, folks in the county’s outer areas have a longer drive. Check current office locations, hours, and online services with the county government office.
