Greene County government runs through a three-member commission

Greene County's county commission has three elected officials, which is separate from Springfield city government and other municipal boards.

Three elected commissioners sit at the center of Greene County government, with four-year terms and a job separate from Springfield city hall. They are part of the county side of the courthouse map, along with offices such as assessor, auditor, collector, circuit clerk, county clerk, and other county officials.

That split is easy to miss because Springfield is the big name most people know. A tax question, county road question, county record, or unincorporated land-use issue may start with county offices. Trash, code, police, or other city services inside Springfield or another municipality may start with city hall.

The cleanest first step is to name the owner of the problem: county government, Springfield, another city, or a separate office.
