Cooper County vehicle owners need the assessment list
Cooper County's Assessor says personal property is tied to what was owned on Jan. 1, and vehicle owners may need to file an assessment list.
A new vehicle can feel like a collector problem, but Cooper County starts this paperwork with the Assessor. Personal property is tied to what a resident owned on Jan. 1. If you lived in Cooper County and owned a vehicle that day, the vehicle needs to be on an assessment list before the later tax bill and receipt can line up.
That same list can catch boats, trailers, and other taxable personal property that came into the household. When something is missing from the roll, the problem often shows up later, right when you are trying to handle a plate or receipt errand.
Assessment lists go out around Jan. 1 and are due back to the Assessor’s Office by March 1. New residents should sort the county-assessment question with the Assessor early, especially if a move or vehicle purchase makes the Jan. 1 ownership picture less obvious.
