Watkins Woolen Mill anchors Clay County state-park history

Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site near Lawson preserves a 19th-century farm and mill complex beside a state park lake and trail system.

Watkins Woolen Mill gives Clay County a state-park history note that is different from the Kansas City edge of the county. Missouri State Parks says the Watkins family farm and mill, called Bethany, became part of the state park system in 1964. The site history page notes that Watkins Woolen Mill was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and a National Mechanical Engineering Historic Landmark in 1980.

For a reader, the important idea is not a checklist of awards. It is that the Lawson-area park and historic site connect recreation with a preserved farm and industrial landscape. Watkins Mill State Park has the lake, trail, campground, fishing, and picnic side. The historic site explains the 19th-century woolen mill and family farm. A visitor should use Missouri State Parks for tour, trail, and access details, because the state manages both the park and the historic-site information.
