The assessor and collector answer different tax questions

Butler County's assessor handles value and assessment records, while the collector handles bills, payments, and receipts.

A property-tax problem can land at the wrong counter if the question is too broad.

In Butler County, the Assessor handles appraisal and assessment. The Collector handles billing and collecting taxes based on those assessments. Those jobs connect, but they are not the same.

If the issue is value, classification, address, or what personal property was listed, start with the Assessor in Poplar Bluff. If the issue is a tax bill, payment, receipt, or whether a balance is paid, start with the Collector.

The split is especially important for vehicle owners. Plate paperwork often depends on both a correct assessment record and a paid receipt, so the right office depends on which part of the chain is wrong.
