Finger Lakes turns former coal ground into Boone County recreation
Finger Lakes State Park north of Columbia is a former coal-mining landscape now used for off-road riding, trails, camping, and water recreation.
North of Columbia, Finger Lakes State Park feels different from a quiet picnic ground. It sits on land shaped by former coal mining, and the park uses that rough ground for off-road motorcycle and ATV trails, a motocross track, camping, a mountain-bike trail, and water access.
That old industrial layer is the local color. The ponds, cuts, hills, and riding areas are part of a reclaimed landscape, so the park explains a piece of Boone County that a courthouse note never will.
Plan by activity. A rider, camper, paddler, or mountain biker may be looking at a different rule or status page. Use Missouri State Parks’ Finger Lakes information before hauling a trailer or planning a weekend north of Columbia.
