Lamar's courthouse story is older than the present building

Barton County's own historical society page traces Lamar's courthouse history through earlier buildings, a Civil War fire, and the present 1887-1888 courthouse.

Lamar’s courthouse square carries more history than the present brick building suggests at first glance. Barton County’s Historical Society page says the county was created in 1855 and Lamar was selected as county seat. It then traces earlier courthouse buildings, including a courthouse burned during the Civil War.

The same source says the fourth and present courthouse was constructed in 1887 to 1888, with pressed brick, Barton County sandstone, and entrance arches made by Lamar Iron Works.

That is good local color because it ties the county seat, square, Civil War disruption, local stone, and local ironwork together. For a resident researching old records, a visitor walking the square, or a newcomer learning Lamar, the courthouse is not just an address for offices. It is a compact timeline of county government.
